July movement martyr's rape victim daughter commits 'suicide'

July movement martyr's daughter, who was gang-raped in Patuakhali's Dumki, has reportedly committed suicide.

Dhaka's Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge SM Zakaria said: "We were informed by Suhrawardy Hospital around 12 midnight that the girl committed suicide by hanging herself at her house in Dhaka."

The girl was living with her family in Shekhertek under Adabor Police Station area.

Family members said that the girl was mentally broken and had doubts about whether she would get justice.

The girl was raped while she was visiting her father's grave in Dumki in March.

It is learnt that while the girl was on her way to her maternal home after visiting her father's grave, Shakib Munshi, 19, a class twelve student of Janata College, and a class ten student, 17, followed her in the Dumki police station area. At one point, they suddenly grabbed her by the face and took her to a garden by the road and raped her.

They also threatened to take pictures of the rape incident and spread it on social media.

The girl filed a case against two people on March 20 in this connection.

The police arrested the main accused Shakib that night and another accused the next day.
