Gunfire erupts at India-Pakistan border
Gunfire has once again broken out between Indian and Pakistani forces along the Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir. So far, no casualties have been reported.
According to Indian media outlet NDTV, Pakistani forces have been firing across the LoC for 11 consecutive nights following a deadly attack in Pahalgam. The latest incident occurred during the night of May 4, when Pakistani troops reportedly opened fire with small arms in sectors including Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Nowshera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. Indian forces responded to the firing.
A terror attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, killed 26 people—mostly tourists on April 22. India blamed Pakistan for the attack, which Islamabad denied. Tensions between the two countries have escalated since then.
Amid the growing tensions, both countries detained each other’s soldiers. An Indian BSF soldier named Purnam Kumar Sahu mistakenly crossed into Pakistan and was detained by Pakistani Rangers on April 23. In response, India captured a Pakistani Ranger on May 3 in Rajasthan.
Following the Pahalgam attack, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, shut the Attari border crossing, and downgraded diplomatic ties. Pakistan retaliated by closing its airspace to Indian aircraft and cutting all trade relations.
Meanwhile, Pakistan conducted a test launch of the 'Abdali' ballistic missile on Saturday. The missile has a range of 450 kilometers. Indian officials described the test as a 'deliberate provocation'.
In response to the rising tension, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an emergency meeting with top military officials on Saturday and met with Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on Sunday.
